A watch that arrived in 1982, built to be worked with gloves on. Turning the bezel selected the mode, which meant a mistake was hard to make in conditions where it mattered.
Astronauts chose it for exactly that, and carried it into orbit. That is how a digital watch built for versatility became one of Seiko's most internationally recognised creations.
Eight sides, eight functions
TIME, TIME SET, TIMER, COUNTER, STOP. W, DUAL TIME, DAILY-AL., and SINGLE-AL, each assigned to a side of the octagon and reached by bringing it to the top.
A design with purpose
The bezel is not a perfect octagon, almost certainly to maintain visual stability, its knurling cut deep for grip, its buttons raised to resist accidental presses. Each decision answered a condition of use rather than an aesthetic brief.
The blueprint, reinterpreted
Reconstructed from the few records that existed, components were cross-referenced, measured to a hundredth of a millimetre, and verified against the manufacturing methods of the period. The dimensions are the 1982 dimensions, retained so the watch wears as it did. Everything around them has been reworked. Bezel surfaces adjusted and finished to remove distortion, lug tops turned to a clean hairline, the bracelet redesigned in cross section for texture and comfort.
Caliber A824
Precision of ±20 seconds a month across roughly three years of battery life. In stopwatch mode, measurement is displayed in 1/100-second increments for the first 60 minutes, after which it switches to 1-second increments and can measure up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. A timer to 100 minutes in 1-minute increments. The full auto calendar runs through 31 December 2074, with LED illumination and a battery life warning.
